Wed 24 Oct - Flinders Ranges SA

Whilst the weather forecast was for 30+ degrees we awake to a mild and cloudy day. Perfect walking weather and we set off at 8am for our "warm up" walk to Wangara Lookout. 7.8km return.

First 3.5km easy path to Hills homestead following the creek (almost wheelchair friendly). The Hills family persisted in trying to farm here up until about 1929 but every drought broke them.
After the homestead it's a short uphill stretch to the lookouts. Rocky path but is well maintained.

Our first real views of the Pound. Great landscape. We love it.

All good as a warm up hike...except for Hans having a close encounter with a very sharp rock with a flesh-wound as the result and then dropping a camera lens cover over a 3m edge. Unbelievably, Hans found the cover after a bit of off-track hiking.

Back to the van for bacon and eggs brunch at 11am.
At 12noon Hans leaves for the Mount Ohlssen Bagge hike. 6.5km return of which about 2.5km climbs about 450m in height. Described as steep and rocky and estimated time to complete is 4 hours. Di opts for reading in camp.

The hike to Mount Ohlssen Bagge (what a fantastic name, one just has to hike it) was fantastic. Rocky, but not overly steep as the hike zigzagged back and forth up to the top. The views from the top are spectacular, one can see the whole pound from there and way east the other way.

There was also this very original piece of stonework that marked the top.

An echidna had also found his home up there.
At Hans return, a very funny sight met him at the campsite. A kangaroo was licking an already clean plate even cleaner, while Di was doing her best to get him to skip away. Very tame and unafraid little fellow. A bit of a Mexican standoff. Eventually, Hans came to the rescue and the roo jumped away.
Time to test out the resort facilities, we are talking the pool here. Very nice and cool after the hiking. Nice!!

After getting a cup of coffee each from the pub at the resort, we purchased our ice for the day and went back to our campsite. Chinese stir fry for dinner. Nice!!

A change is rolling in, with some relief in temperature and tomorrow may see a shower... We will see.

Hans The Hiker...
